UK Joint Committee on Human Rights urges Government to Scrap Rights Removal Bill

The UK Parliament's Joint Committee for Human Rights (JCHR) has urged the UK Government not to proceed with plans to replace the Human Rights Act with new legislation.

The new Bill is called the British Bill of Rights Bill, but is so regressive that civil society has dubbed it the 'Rights Removal Bill.'

Through legislative scrutiny, the JCHR has found significant problems with the Bill, arguing that it will impede the ability of individuals to seek justice for human rights breaches. It could tip the balance in favour of the state, and remove important protections for people in urgent situations, even where there is a credible risk to life.

Finally, the Committee highlights the risk the Bill poses to devolution, as the Human Rights Act plays a key role in the Good Friday Agreement and the Scotland Act.
