HRCS submits joint letter to the First Minister calling for HR bill

Last week marked a busy end to August for the HRCS...

The Consortium joined more than 50 organisations in calling on the First Minister to commit to introducing a Human Rights Bill in the forthcoming Programme for Government.

In a joint letter, signatories highlighted the role a Human Rights Bill could play in tackling poverty, inequality and exclusion by strengthening accountability and embedding human rights across public policy and services. The letter also emphasises the importance of the Bill in supporting the Scottish Government’s ambition to end child poverty. 

The signatories are urging the Scottish Government to deliver on its manifesto commitment and bring forward the legislation as a key step towards a more equal, just and thriving Scotland.

The call comes as the Scottish Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has also highlighted the importance of adopting a human rights-based approach to ending poverty in Scotland, arguing that lasting progress requires stronger protections, accountability and action grounded in people’s rights.

Together, these interventions reinforce the case for a Human Rights Bill as a practical tool to help create a more equal, just and thriving Scotland.
