As Scotland is looking to bring our international human rights closer to home and directly into Scots law, now is the time to have our voices heard.

Scotland has historically been a country of migration. While throughout history Scots have emigrated and formed Scottish diasporas around the world, in turn many other communities have made Scotland their home. Now, there are nearly 400,000 migrants living in Scotland. We want human rights to be a reality for all of us in Scotland – so we need to understand what accessing these human rights actually looks like in practice for migrants.

With the Human Rights Bill for Scotland in the making, we asked migrants to share their views and lived experiences during the public consultation between June & October 2023. In partnership with Citizens’ Rights Project, MIN Voices, JustCitizens and Migrant Voice, we held 9 community conversations with over 80 participants, as well as an open online event with 48 participants. This created a platform and brought people together from diverse migrant communities to talk about their rights issues and lived experiences, and have their voices heard by the Scottish Government.

Please join us for the launch !

We are holding an online event to launch our partnership report on these conversations with migrants for the Human Rights Bill consultation on Wednesday, March 13, from 12-1pm – you can sign up on Eventbrite

With a line-up of speakers from our partner organisations, we want to discuss the key issues voiced by migrants and highlighted in our report to the Scottish Government.

What’s next?

HRCS wants to strengthen connections between Human Rights & migrants’ rights organisations. We want to help facilitate the voices of those with lived experience of migration to be increasingly heard in human rights developments.

Our Migrant Participation Officer is holding conversations with a wide variety of migrants’ and ethnic minority organisations to create more spaces for exchange, identify gaps in the realisation of human rights for migrants – and spotlight key issues to take forward and address through our work.

If your organisation or community would like to take part in the project and have your voices heard, please get in touch with Doro emailing doro@hrcscotland.org

The project is funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
